Editor's Note:
I’m an unbeliever in most things that require me to think too far ahead, simply because I like to keep things as fluid as possible. It’s also possibly because, for most of my younger life, everything was sorted out and planned out for me, including an ideal career in some sort of corporate office, right up till the point when I decided I’d rather lead my life in editorial vagabondage.
Such a lifestyle can be difficult at best of times. But it’s also rather liberating, as our former colleague Daniel, who’s on his own self-searching semi-existentialist crisis journey at the moment, discovers in his column. Unpredictability allows for surprises and unexpected developments. For most of the past seven years, my life has been more or less a series of fortunate events.
In fact, most of the stories that took place within this issue all came about purely by accident. Tom Odell, the BRIT-award winning artist, managed to squeeze in some time with us during his day-long trip to perform in Singapore. And we grabbed the opportunity to toss him a few questions while he was trying to recover from jet lag. Scott Cassell, the superhuman figure who is a champion of the sea and one of the most courageous people we’ve ever met, found time during his Asian tour and in between testing out his submersible to speak with us about combating poachers and the significance of protecting the marine environment. A chance opportunity to speak with friend of Dior Homme and Korean star Joo Jin-Mo also came about with nearly no prep time. It’s part of the joys (and challenges) of working in an industry where fluidity is essential. If there was a theme to this issue, it would be that of welcoming mavericks, up-and-comers who are inspiring and spurring others on to do better and more in life.
October has been a month of surprises, first with White Lies performing in Singapore for the launch of Burberry’s Brit Rhythm fragrance, and then the announcement of the departure of Angela Ahrendts next year to head Apple’s retail strategy, while Christopher Bailey takes over as CEO of the British fashion label. The stalemate over the US debt ceiling has also come to an end, if only temporarily, giving the country more time to sort out its issues. On our end, we were delighted that our annual August Man A-Listers campaign won an award at the inaugural Loyalty and Engagement Awards by Marketing magazine, for creating an all-rounded, multi-platform competition that gave you more reason to pick up a copy of the magazine.
